Starter Kit: Your Reflected Best Self (RBS)

If you’re looking to deepen your self-awareness, want to understand how you can make the best impact or just looking to be world class at what you do, the Reflected Best Self (RBS) will take you to the next level.

Wait what is an RBS?

The RBS will help you examine the impact you’ve made on people in different parts of your life and nudge you to redesign your life around your strengths, so that you can maximize impact and personal fulfillment.

I’ve written a step-by-step guide on how to find Your Reflected Best Self.

  1. List 10+ people from different parts of your life

  2. Ask them, “When was I at my best?” and collect their responses

  3. Look for patterns in the responses

  4. Compose your self portrait of who you are at your best

  5. Redesign your life around your strengths

Steps 1-2 are Part 1 of the guide. Steps 3-5 are in Part 2.

Now that you’ve seen all 5 steps of the Reflected Best Self Exercise, it’s your turn to try it and unlock a deeper understanding of your strengths and who you are at your best!

The RBS Starter Kit

To help you get started, I’ve put together an RBS Starter Kit to kickstart your journey.

The starter kit contains scripts, templates and sample artifacts which I’ve developed for myself when doing my yearly RBS. I’m super excited to share them with you and hope they help you overcome the initial hurdle of resistance.

For Step 2:

📝Template Google Form

Here’s a template form which you can copy and modify to use as your survey form.Do change the heading to include your name and modify the form description to your taste. Just Add a copy of this template to your google drive, change your name and you’re off to the races!

📲Message Scripts

Here’s the exact script I used to reach out to people in order to ask them to respond to the survey. You can use this verbatim or as the basis for your outreach message. I usually reached out to people in the place I talked with them, so Slack and email for co-workers, and text / Whatsapp/ Facebook for friends and family.

For Step 3:

✍️Table to Analyze Patterns

Here’s a link to a Google doc containing an editable version of a table which you can use to organize your responses and find patterns and themes. I’ve included a sample theme from my 2020 RBS. You’re welcome to follow my format or use your own!

For Step 4:

🎨 Sample Self Portrait

Here’s a sample self portrait which you can use as inspiration for your own. This is a real self-portrait I created for myself in 2016/17. I’ve annotated it with suggestions and things to keep in mind:
